Indian police bust LTTE supply chain

The Tamil Nadu Police on Wednesday arrested a man alleged to be part of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) top brass, the Times of India reported.

The Sri Lankan man, identified only as Thambi Annan, is reported to have been the LTTE pointsperson for procuring major consignments including explosive substances for the LTTE. Following specific information given by State Intelligence, Annan was arrested in Chennai on Wednesday.

Thambi Annan is reported to have played an instrumental role in smuggling war-like items, explosives from India and other parts of the world to the LTTE. Police said that the confessions provided by the terrorist could give leads to the source and supply network of the LTTE.

Meanwhile, four Sri Lankan nationals were arrested from Ramanthapuram on Wednesday for allegedly attempting to smuggle several contraband items, including a Global Positioning System (GPS) and a satellite phone, worth Indian Rs 5 million to Sri Lanka, police said. The contraband was meant for the LTTE, sources said.

A team led by Inspector Kalifullah arrested the four— Neethiran, Ramanan, Sivaram and Vignesh, all belonging to Jaffna, police said.

Police also seized other items, including pistol covers, battery recharger, torch, satellite receiver phone, LTTE uniforms, 3,360 pen torch batteries, one CD and 11 life jackets from their possession.

They were also carrying Rs 28,050.

Special teams had been stationed at many localities in the coastal areas to check smuggling activities, they added.
